Carol Shields' critical examination
of the work of the Canadian writer Susanna Moodie is divided
into three chapters: Mrs. Moodie and the Complex Personality,
Mrs. Moodie and Sexual Reversal, Mrs. Moodie and the Social
structure, with a bibliography.
It includes analysis of Life
in the Clearings, Roughing It in the Bush,
Waiting for Dead Men's Shoes, and Matrimonial
Speculations.
An interesting fact is that the
central character of Shield's novel Small Ceremonies
is working on a biography of Mrs. Moodie.
